MX-5 NC 2.5 Engine Swap & Replacement
200 hp · 260 Nm · N/A
Blown 1.8 or tired 2.0? A direct bolt-in 2.5 L5-VE — same MZR family, same mounts, same gearbox, no fabrication. On the stock manifold with my base map: 180–185hp, 245Nm. Add the 45mm headers: 190–200hp. Add the Stage 2 cams: 218–220hp, €4,000 — or 225hp with the FAB9 intake, the car on the dyno charts below.
Engine from €1,800 ex VAT on pre-order (€2,000 on arrival). Complete bolt-in kit from €2,600 ex VAT. Fitted here in Athens from €4,500. Every number came off my own DynoRevolt, DIN 70020 — I'd rather you read 185 and get 190 than read 200 and get 185.

Before you drop in another 1.8 or 2.0, see what your car needs for a 2.5. We separate engine, ECU, parts, tune, shipping and labour — no hidden costs.
From Yiannis
Your NC doesn't need a repair.
It needs a new heart.
A tired 1.8 rebuild costs €2,500–3,000 and hands you back the same 126hp that bored you. The same money puts a 2.5 L5-VE with 40–60,000 km in your bay — 180hp on the bare swap — up to 220hp with cams — and torque everywhere. The car Mazda should have built.
I'll find you a good one, check it inside the cylinders with a camera, and stay on the phone until it starts. I'm Yiannis — Artemis, Athens. My own dyno, my own hands, my own phone. 114 of these engines since 2017 · 131 Google reviews, 5.0.
There's no question too basic here — the same one gets asked by almost everyone. You're not supposed to know this stuff. That's the job you pay me for.
Which ECU — NC1 or NC2?
I'll tell you for your exact car. It ships with our 2.5 base map already flashed, immobilizer sorted.
The blanking plug
The one nobody in Europe stocks? It's in the box. You never chase a single part.
My mechanic never did this swap
He can message me directly. Several of our customers' mechanics had never done a 2.5 — now they have.
Being honest about what I can't control: the September batch was due on 2/9. It landed 25/9. Ships are ships. What I do control — you know the date the day I know it, a photo of your engine on the bench before it's crated, and the tracking number the hour it leaves.
Start with the smallest possible step.
Don't buy anything today. Send me your chassis number and what you want out of the car — you'll get a line-by-line quote (engine, parts, VAT, shipping, total) the same day. Not a "contact us" form. An actual number you can think about.

€1,800 ex VAT pre-order vs €2,000 on arrival.
A real difference — not a fake discount. You lock the price and your place in the delivery queue. Price held 14 days.

A used 2.0, today
~180,000 km · €1,800
Listed on kleinanzeigen right now. No inspection, no paper, no guarantee.
My 2.5
40–60,000 km · €1,800 ex VAT
Inspected inside on camera, with paperwork and a 90-day guarantee.
Same money. One gives you back what you already have. The other gives you 25 more horsepower straight away — and it's the only NA engine that climbs to 220.
If it doesn't start because of something I sent you, I put another engine on a pallet to your door — shipping on me. Not a repair — a replacement.
Every engine leaves here inspected inside on camera, cylinder by cylinder, with its mileage verified against the donor paperwork. If one still has an internal fault that was in it when it shipped — no compression, a knock on first start, no oil pressure — that's on me, not you.
For it to stand
- Fitted by a professional workshop — send me the invoice.
- Oil and filter changed before the first start.
- The correct 2.0 ECU and loom (I tell you which before you pay).
- Running my base map or a tune I did — a tune from anyone else, or boost of any kind, ends it. I can't stand behind another tuner's timing map.
- No overheating, and don't keep driving it with a light on.
Before anything comes apart
Send me a video of the start attempt and a photo of the engine number — it has to match your invoice. Message me first; half of these get solved on the phone in ten minutes.
Not covered: installation mistakes, parts you fitted, labour, towing, time off the road.
It's a bolt-in swap — same MZR family, no fabrication.
Which ECU — NC1 or NC2?
We tell you exactly which 2.0 ECU your car needs and supply it with the base map. Immobilizer disabled — solved.
The blanking plug
Impossible to find in Europe? It comes in the kit. You never chase parts.
No mechanic? No problem
Any competent local shop can fit it — we calibrate remotely and your mechanic talks straight to Yiannis.
Why the €350 ECU isn't a rip-off: a used 2.0 ECU costs €40 on a breaker's shelf — and it will not start your car. It's married to the immobiliser, the key and the cluster, which is why people end up buying a €300 matched set with someone else's clocks. I kill the immobiliser and flash your base map before it ships. Plug it in, turn the key, it runs.
And the base map drives from day one — you can drive it home before the final tune. You're not stuck with an engine on the floor waiting on anyone.
The steps
- Drop the old engine, transfer mounts / gearbox / sump / ancillaries
- Bolt in the 2.5 (+ oil pickup & BSD kit)
- 2.0 ECU with base map + VVT wiring (1.8 donors)
- First start, road/dyno check
You're never alone
- Step-by-step PDF guide with every kit
- Yiannis on WhatsApp through the whole install
- Any local mechanic can fit it — remote calibration support included
Pedro sent his own mechanic straight to us — that's the level of support.
You don't need: subframe changes, a different radiator, or custom wiring looms. It keeps its own harness.
The four things everyone asks before they pay
"Will it start?"
Every engine is bore-scoped cylinder by cylinder before it ships, 40–60,000 km, and covered by the 90-day start-up guarantee.
"Can my mechanic do it?"
Yes. Same mounts, same gearbox, same loom — it bolts in where the old one came out. He gets my fitting guide and can message me directly while the car is on the lift. 114 of these were fitted by other people's mechanics across 20+ countries.
"What do I do with my old engine?"
If it's a running 2.0, it's worth €700–1,200 — check kleinanzeigen, they're listed at €1,100–1,900 right now. Sell it where you live; shipping an engine across Europe costs more than it's worth. Even a seized one is worth a few hundred as a parts donor. Before it leaves your garage, strip the parts your 2.5 needs — I'll send you the list.
"Is this real?"
DMS Tuned, Leoforos Karamanli 127, Artemida, Athens. 5.0★ from 131 Google reviews. My own dyno, my own numbers, DIN 70020. I answer my own phone: +30 697 728 8810.
Registration in your country: I won't guess your local law — Germany's, the Netherlands', anyone's. What I give you is the paperwork your registrar or TÜV inspector asks for: a full invoice with the engine number, and the build / dyno spec on request. The legal side is between you and your local authority — check with them before you buy if it matters for your registration.

Dyno-Developed Packages
From a clean Stage 1 remap to a full top-mount turbo build — every package developed on our dyno. MX-5 NC.
What is the MX-5 NC 2.5 Swap?
The MX-5 NC 2.5 swap is the most popular naturally-aspirated engine upgrade for the Mazda MX-5 NC (2005-2015). It involves replacing the factory 2.0L MZR engine (LF-VE, 160hp) with the larger 2.5L L5-VE from the Mazda 3, 5, or 6 — a direct bolt-on conversion within the same MZR engine family.
The result: 180hp and 245Nm of torque — a strong lift in power and torque over stock — with zero turbo lag, OEM-level reliability, and a linear power delivery that transforms the MX-5 driving experience. The 2.5L swap is widely recognized across Europe as the single best value-for-money upgrade for the NC platform.

Why the 2.5L L5-VE?
Direct Bolt-On
Same MZR engine family — identical mounting points, bellhousing pattern, and wiring. No custom fabrication, no cutting, no welding. Factory-level fitment.
Massive Torque Gain
The L5-VE's 2.5L displacement delivers 245Nm vs 188Nm stock — a 30% increase that transforms mid-range response and eliminates the NC's well-known torque deficit.
OEM Reliability
The L5-VE is a production Mazda engine with millions of units worldwide. Proven in the Mazda 3, 5, 6, and CX-7. No experimental builds — just a larger, stronger factory engine.
Tuning Headroom
With a custom ECU calibration via MazdaEdit, the 2.5L produces ~180hp NA. Add 45mm headers for 190–200hp, Stage 2 cams for 220hp. Or add a turbo later for 350-450hp — the 2.5L block handles it.
At DMS Tuned, we have completed over 200 MX-5 NC 2.5 swaps for clients across Greece and Europe. Every build follows our strict DMS Engineering Standards — genuine Mazda components, new seals and bearings, and final dyno verification on our in-house 2WD dynamometer in Athens. We offer both in-house turn-key installations at our Artemida workshop and engine shipping with remote ECU calibration for DIY builders across Europe.
Whether you're a weekend canyon carver, a track-day enthusiast, or simply want the MX-5 NC to finally have the power it deserves, the 2.5L swap is the answer. No turbo maintenance, no boost threshold, no compromise — up to 220hp of naturally-aspirated Mazda engineering, verified on dyno and backed by 200+ successful builds.

Real parts, real cars, our own dyno — genuine DMS photos, no stock imagery.

Why the MX-5 NC 2.5 Swap is the Best Upgrade
More torque, OEM reliability, zero lag — here's why 200+ owners chose the 2.5L over every other option.
Massive Torque Increase
The stock MX-5 NC 2.0L produces 188Nm — modest torque for the chassis. The 2.5L L5-VE delivers 245Nm, a 30% increase that completely transforms mid-range response.
This isn't peak-only power like a turbo setup. The torque curve is fat and linear from 3,000 to 7,000rpm — exactly where you use it on road and track. The MX-5 finally pulls like it should.

Reliability vs Turbo Builds
A turbo kit adds complexity: intercooler, piping, oil lines, boost control, and heat management. More parts mean more failure points. The 2.5L swap adds zero extra components — it's a factory Mazda engine in a factory Mazda car.
No boost leaks. No turbo bearing failures. No heat soak. No wastegate issues. The L5-VE has millions of units running worldwide in Mazda 3s, 5s, and 6s. It's proven, bulletproof, and requires nothing beyond standard maintenance.
Daily Drivability
The 2.5L swap makes the MX-5 NC a better daily driver. More low-end torque means less downshifting in traffic. Smoother highway cruising at lower RPM. No turbo lag when merging or overtaking.
It idles the same. It starts the same. It passes emissions the same. The only difference you'll feel is more power everywhere — without any compromise in fuel economy, drivability, or refinement. It's the upgrade Mazda should have built from the factory.
Considering forced induction instead?
The 2.5 swap is the NA answer — but if you want boost, our MX-5 NC turbo kit fits the 1.8, 2.0 and 2.5, dyno-developed in-house from daily-friendly power to full-build.
A complete kit, not "some assembly required"
There are four ways to get a 2.5 into an NC. Here is what each one actually costs you.
| Option | Price | What you get | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| DMS Tuned Complete kit · ex works | from €2,600 | Inspected L5-VE, ECU calibration written for your VIN, oil pickup, install guide, remote support | Shipped EU-wide, 3–13 days |
| Racing Beat Europe Engine only | £5,982 | Their own page: "This is NOT a direct swap kit, there is work you need to do" | Shipped |
| eBay UK listing Supply & fit | £2,999 | Used JDM engine fitted. No calibration mentioned. | You drive to the Midlands |
| DIY from a breaker | ~€800–1,400 | Bare engine. No file. Rough running, check-engine light, no dyno. | Your driveway |
The engine is the easy part — there are thousands of L5-VE units in breakers across Europe. The calibration is the part nobody can hand you. A bare 2.5 in an NC without a proper file is a car that runs badly and throws codes.
Exactly what a 2.5 swap needs — genuine Mazda part numbers
The 2.0 and 2.5 MZR share the same architecture, but a clean swap needs specific new hardware. These are the genuine Mazda numbers. Every DMS kit ships with them already in the box — including the calibration, which no parts kit on the market includes.
| Part | Mazda part number | Note |

| Timing tool kit | CT4064 | Required to re-time the engine |
Keep from your 2.0
Oil sump, oil-filter mount, intake manifold, cam cover, crankshaft pulley, ancillaries (power steering, water pump, alternator, A/C), fuel rail, water outlet, engine mounts, oil-pressure switch, crank position sensor, coil packs, thermostat housing.
Carry over from the 2.5
Injectors and the VVT solenoid with its gasket. Everything else that touches the swap is either kept from your 2.0 or replaced new from the list above.
Delete
The balance shafts. The 2.0 sump can't house them, so they come out and the oil feed is plugged with the delete kit (MST-02-0156). A standard, reliable part of every NC 2.5 swap.
The three things that catch people out
- 1.The 2.5 oil pan doesn't clear the NC subframe. You reuse the MX-5's own 2.0 sump — the 2.5 pan physically won't fit.
- 2.That 2.0 sump isn't big enough for the balance shafts. So they're removed and the oil feed is plugged with the balance-shaft delete kit (MST-02-0156).
- 3.The crankshaft pulley must be transferred from your 2.0. It has a different number of teeth to the 2.5's — the crank sensor reads off it, so the wrong pulley means the car won't run right.
Running a manual? Two extra parts
The donor 2.5 almost always comes out of an automatic. That means the engine has to be re-timed with a timing tool (CT4064), and it needs a pilot bearing (YF09-11-303) to support the input shaft of your manual gearbox — the automatic never had one because it never saw the same shock loads. Miss this and the gearbox input shaft has nothing to run in. Both are in every DMS manual-spec kit.

The 2.5L L5-VE swap is a direct bolt-on for all MX-5 NC models (2005-2015). The engine belongs to the same MZR family as the stock 2.0L, making it a factory-level fit without custom fabrication. NB models can also receive the swap with minor additional modifications.
Both bolt in the same way, but a 1.8L (MZR) donor needs three items a 2.0L (LF) does not: a 2.0 oil pickup, a 2.0 ECU (re-pinned) and the matching wiring adaptation — while it keeps its own 1.8 engine harness. Budget roughly €430 on top of the base kit for a 1.8 (2.0 ECU with base map €350 + oil pickup €80). Everything else — mounts, gearbox, sump and ancillaries — transfers just as it does on a 2.0 swap.
A stock 2.5L L5-VE swap with our base map produces approximately 180hp and 245Nm — a strong jump from the stock 167hp / 188Nm. Add 45mm headers for 190–200hp, and Stage 2 cams for 220hp naturally aspirated (225hp with the FAB9 intake), all verified on our in-house 2WD dyno.
Absolutely. The L5-VE is a production Mazda engine used in the Mazda 3, 5, and 6. It is inherently reliable with proper installation. Our DMS Engineering Standards ensure every build uses OEM-grade components: genuine Mazda friction washers, new seals, pilot bearings, and a fresh clutch rated for the increased torque.
It depends on your current engine and goals. The Quick Swap (engine + shipping + balance shaft delete) starts at €2,600 for 2.0L owners or €3,030 for 1.8L owners (includes the 2.0 ECU with base map + oil pickup). The Performance Swap with headers + custom tune + MazdaEdit kit is €3,150. The Full Power Build with Stage 2.5 cams (220hp) is €4,000. All prices include EU-wide shipping.
A complete turn-key swap takes 5-7 working days at our Artemida (Athens) workshop. This includes engine preparation, installation, wiring, ECU calibration on our in-house 2WD dyno, and final quality checks. You hand over the keys and pick up a finished, dyno-verified build.
Yes. We offer remote ECU calibration for DIY builders worldwide via our DMShub platform. We provide a detailed DMS Mandatory Specs List to ensure your build meets our engineering standards. Once your engine is installed and verified, we calibrate your ECU remotely using MazdaEdit.
The 2.5L swap delivers linear, naturally-aspirated power with zero turbo lag and OEM reliability — ideal for street and spirited driving. A turbo kit offers higher peak power (350-450hp) but requires more supporting mods, maintenance, and has a different power delivery. Many of our clients start with the 2.5 swap and add a turbo later for ultimate power.
Yes. We ship 2.5L L5-VE engines and complete swap component kits throughout Europe — including EU countries, the UK, Switzerland, and Norway. We also support remote tuning clients worldwide through our DMShub platform, providing engineering support and ECU calibration remotely.

With the 2.5L swap producing 180hp in an MX-5 NC weighing approximately 1,100kg, you get a power-to-weight ratio of about 164hp per tonne — comparable to sports cars costing 3-4x more. With Stage 2 upgrades (220hp), this improves to 200hp per tonne. The lightweight MX-5 platform makes every horsepower count.
